| Appearance | Discrete spots, freckles, patches | Larger symmetrical patches, often bilateral |
| Common locations | Anywhere sun-exposed | Cheeks, upper lip, forehead, chin |

A clinical assessment is required to distinguish between pigmentation types and determine the appropriate treatment protocol.
Tulsa Guide to Treating Hyperpigmentation
Understanding your pigmentation type is the first step toward effective, lasting correction.
5 Things to Know Before Treating Dark Spots
- 1
Not all dark spots are the same.
Sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and seborrheic keratoses each require different approaches. A clinical assessment — not a photo consultation — is required to correctly identify your pigmentation type and choose the right treatment.
- 2
Treated spots will temporarily darken before clearing.
After IPL treatment, targeted pigment absorbs the light energy and oxidizes, causing spots to appear darker (a coffee ground appearance) for 7–14 days before naturally flaking off. This is a normal and expected part of the process.
- 3
Sun protection is required before and after treatment.
Active sun exposure in the weeks before treatment can increase the risk of complications. After treatment, daily SPF is essential — not optional — to protect treated skin and prevent new pigmentation from forming.
- 4
Skin tone determines which technology is safest.
IPL is most effective and safest for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). For medium to deeper skin tones, PicoWay® Resolve or adjusted IPL settings are used to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the treatment itself.
- 5
Results require maintenance.
Pigmentation is an ongoing biological process. While treated spots are cleared, new ones can form without consistent sun protection and a supportive skincare routine. Your provider will recommend a maintenance plan tailored to your skin.
